Seven-Week Classic Doctor Who Twitch Viewing Event: Over 500 classic episodes to air on Twitch from May 29 to July 23
If you love Doctor Who, and who doesn’t, you may want to consider a major binge starting May 29 when BBC Studios teams with Twitch for the Classic Doctor Who Twitch Viewing Event that will stream classic Doctor Who episodes over the social video service.
Twitch offers another innovative alternative to broadcast and the now “legacy” streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Video, and Hulu. The interesting business model spin is the limited release of the series through Twitch. This further disburses sources for traditional broadcast content, turning it into a narrowcast for audiences aligned by platform. We could clearly see Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica streamed over Twitch or Mixer. Of course, YouTube Red is already venturing off in this direction, but with a less focused audience model.
The narrowcast model isn’t likely to produce enough viewers or funding to bring first-run scripted programming. The auxiliary social programming, however, along with panel-style talk shows may offer enough new content to make the package appealing. This is also a way for studios to relaunch their most lucrative assets (merchandising as much as advertising) to new audience. The narrowcast avoids the shows getting lost in the onslaught of new programming and huge syndication collections on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Video.
The short window also lets the studio and streamers quickly adjust and adapt to lessons learned.
Pioneering new technologies
Nick Coulter, Director of Digital Sales and Business Development at BBC Studios says of the Classic Doctor Who Twitch Viewing Event: “We are constantly looking at ways to reach new audiences and make it easier for fans to engage with our most popular shows. Doctor Who, in particular, has a great tradition of pioneering new technologies, from early VHS all the way through to the new digital services of today. Twitch is another great example of this, as a brilliant service with over 15 million active daily users, we are thrilled to be able to offer them the chance to indulge in the Classic Doctor Who series and celebrate its amazing 54 year legacy of excitement and innovation.”
Twitch will augment the run with social engagements with chat— and viewers who Subscribe to TwitchPresents will gain access to 14 exclusive emotes themed after each of the first seven doctors. They will also host a giveaway each week, including a grand prize trip to London Comic Con in Fall 2018. For details on the giveaway, visit https://watch.twitch.tv/DoctorWhoSweepstakes.
As part of the Classic Doctor Who Twitch Viewing Event, leading UK digital content creators The Yogscast will deliver a series of shows to introduce each Doctor. With a cast of Doctor Who screenwriters, experts, fans, and even a former companion, the Yogscast’s Turps and resident Doctor Who expert and High Roller’s player Matt Toffollo will be discussing why today’s geeks should watch Doctor Who. The 20-minute episodes will offer a brief summary of the stories, including information about the actors, monsters, famous phrases and production gaffes. With first-hand knowledge from former companion Katy Manning (who played Jo Grant the Third Doctor Companion) and writers Bob Baker and Paul Cornell, the shows will give viewers new perspectives on the series, along with the humor and irreverence expected from Yogscast.
