San Diego Comic-Con 2024 Star Trek Announcements: New Series, Legacy Cast, and Epic Trailers Revealed

San Diego Comic-Con 2024 was a monumental event for Star Trek fans, offering a galaxy of thrilling updates and new content. From casting news and trailer debuts to fresh series announcements and beloved characters returning, this year’s convention had something for every Trekkie. Whether you’re eagerly awaiting the next season of Strange New Worlds or excited about the final chapter of Lower Decks, here’s a high-level summary of all the Star Trek revelations that made headlines at SDCC 2024.

Cillian O’Sullivan Joins Strange New Worlds

In an exciting casting reveal, Cillian O’Sullivan (known for In From The Cold) will take on the legacy role of Dr. Roger Korby in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Korby, originally portrayed by Michael Strong in Star Trek: What Are Little Girls Made Of? (see our AI in Star Trek TOS post here), will be a recurring character in the upcoming season. Fans were treated to an extended clip from the third season, promising more of the high-quality storytelling and adventure that has defined Strange New Worlds. A particularly intriguing scene showed members of the Enterprise crew turning into Vulcans for a mission, with unexpected consequences when the transformation doesn’t reverse as planned.

Lower Decks Season 5 Premiere Date Announced

The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks is set to premiere with two episodes on October 24. This season, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos faces the chaos of “space potholes,” Orion wars, furious Klingons, diplomatic crises, and more. The season finale will air on December 19, wrapping up the adventures of this beloved underdog crew. Paramount+ released a new trailer during the panel, teasing the hilarious and chaotic final journey of Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford. (Unless the chanting crowd and various petitions result in a series cancelation reprieve or a new home).

New Live-Action Star Trek Comedy Series

Co-creators Justin Simien and Tawny Newsome teased a new live-action comedy series set in the Star Trek universe. This series, titled Federation Outsiders, follows the daily exploits of people on a resort planet as their lives are broadcast across the quadrant. Details are still sparse, but the concept promises a fresh, humorous take on Star Trek.

Starfleet Academy Series Adds Legacy Cast Members

The highly-anticipated Starfleet Academy series has added several familiar faces. Tig Notaro (Jett Reno), Oded Fehr (Admiral Vance), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), and Robert Picardo (The Doctor) will join the cast, bringing their beloved characters to this new venture. Production begins in August, with fans eager to see these legacy characters in action once again. The series will follow a new class of Starfleet cadets navigating their training and personal growth under the watchful eyes of their demanding instructors.

Teaser Trailer for Section 31

Paramount+ unveiled the first teaser trailer for Star Trek: Section 31, featuring cast members Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson, and Kacey Rohl. Michelle Yeoh, who stars in the film, made a surprise appearance via video to introduce the teaser. The film promises a thrilling look at the shadowy side of Starfleet operations, with a young Philippa Georgiou, played by Miku Martineau, adding an intriguing new dimension to the story. Yeoh’s return as Emperor Georgiou, now part of a secret division of Starfleet, is set to be a highlight as she confronts her dark past while protecting the United Federation of Planets.

Prodigy Season 2 Release Details

Fans of Star Trek: Prodigy were delighted to learn that Season 2 will be available on Digital demand on July 29, with Blu-Ray and DVD releases set for November 12. Stars Kate Mulgrew (Admiral Janeway) and Brett Gray (Dal) joined executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman for a panel discussion and a screening of the episode “Cracked Mirror,” giving fans a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come.

Intergalactic Friendship Day Panel

In a celebration of sci-fi camaraderie, Star Trek‘s Alex Kurtzman and Doctor Who‘s Russell T. Davies held an exclusive creator-to-creator conversation during the Intergalactic Friendship Day panel. They discussed storytelling in alternate universes and the enduring themes of friendship in both franchises. A special event will see Star Trek and Doctor Who intersect in two mobile games starting August 1, providing fans with a unique cross-franchise experience.
