I like cute. This compact BENFEI USB-C to Audio Jack Adapter is cute. It combines audio high definition audio for devices like iPhone and iPad (and other USB-C powered devices that no longer ship with an audio jack) along with an input for power. All for under twelve dollars. And did I say it was cute, as it folds up into something that looks more like a keychain decoration than high-tech audio enabler.

And while I wouldn’t suggest carrying the BENFEI USB-C to Audio Jack Adapter among a jangle of keys all the time, it would likely survive the experience, save a few scratches. The folding strain relief design, featuring shielded wiring, BENFEI claims, will withstand 30,000 bends. The 18-month warranty further underscores the quality of the adapter. Wired audio continues to exceed the capabilities of wireless. This device will bring back wired audio for a variety of use cases, from enhanced sound from local speakers to seamless integration with audio systems ranging from cars to conference rooms. And it’s cute.

The tiny square adapter provides uninterrupted power and audio—no battery worries—while wearing wired headphones and using in-line controls.

The inclusion of an “advanced DAC smart-chip” delivers high-definition audio and noise reduction. The 24bit/96KHz DAC drive adapter paired well with my Campfire Audio Mammoth EIMs, producing outstanding audio across my headphone-testing music suite. The combination produced volume and accuracy out of my iPad Air that cannot be matched by Bluetooth headphones.

I’m not used to noise anymore in my audio experiences. For much of my life, every audio experience started with a buzz or a hiss, which often persisted while listening to the music or television show, only abating at power off, often with a pop, a snap or some indescribable, near-alien contortion of sound. Hooking up the Benfei USB-C to Audio Jack Adapter reminded me slightly of that experience, a low whine when nothing was playing. When I kicked on the tunes, the whine was either overwhelmed or disappeared, but it came back when the music stopped. It wasn’t annoying during audio playback, but it was there, and potential buyers should be aware.

Despite attractive features, the product copy remains rooted in marketing phrasing such as “Hi-Fi sound,” “powerful noise reduction,” and even the stress testing of components, without independent third-party testing or benchmark data, which means the assertions are entirely based on vendor claims. While I can report that the charging and the audio work well, and the audio produced, to my ears, outstanding aural reproduction, I can’t report on any technical details that audiophiles may seek.
