Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology shrank what used to be brick-sized power supplies into something that slips easily into a travel pouch. The market now competes on wattage, ports, and folding plugs. The Twelve South PlugBug Travel 50 takes a different path. It asks a deceptively simple question: what if the charger itself became something worth tracking?

That idea sounds almost frivolous until a charger disappears in a hotel room, airport lounge, conference center, or behind a bedside table. After years of traveling with far too many USB-C adapters, I’ve concluded that chargers occupy an odd place in the hierarchy of essential gear. They aren’t expensive enough to insure, but losing one can derail an entire trip. The PlugBug Travel 50 recognizes that reality by integrating Apple’s Find My network directly into the charger itself rather than asking travelers to attach an AirTag with tape, rubber bands, or wishful thinking. It turns a commodity accessory into a trackable travel tool, even when its not plugged in.

The defining feature is unquestionably the integrated Apple Find My support. Unlike attaching an AirTag to a charger, PlugBug feels purpose-built. If it ends up in the wrong hotel room or buried in the bottom of a suitcase, the Find My app can locate it anywhere Apple’s network reaches. It can also emit a sound to aid recovery. That feature transforms the charger into a proxy tracker for an entire travel bag whenever it’s stored. It solves a genuine travel annoyance without requiring another accessory or another object to remember.

The Twelve South PlugBug Travel 50 deserves attention independent of the tracking capability. The PlugBug Travel 50 is remarkably thin and lies flat against the wall rather than protruding awkwardly into the room. That sounds like a minor design decision until you deal with hotel outlets hidden behind furniture, airport charging stations where oversized chargers often block neighboring sockets, or overly large ones that give way to gravity and fall out of aging outlets. GaN technology allows Twelve South to deliver 50 watts through two USB-C Power Delivery ports while keeping the package compact enough to disappear into a tech pouch. At approximately $80, it costs more than a conventional dual-port charger, but the industrial design feels deliberate rather than ornamental.

International travel receives equal attention. Rather than expecting travelers to hunt for country-specific adapters before departure, the Travel version includes interchangeable plugs for the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, Korea, and China, all organized inside a dedicated carrying case. That organization is almost as important as the adapters because loose travel plugs have a remarkable tendency to migrate to the least convenient location in a suitcase, or to just get left behind (at home or in the hotel).

Power delivery is intelligently managed between both USB-C ports. The charger dynamically allocates available power based on connected devices, allowing simultaneous charging of phones, tablets, handheld gaming devices, cameras, or a MacBook Air without requiring users to think about which port offers higher output. For the kinds of equipment most travelers actually carry every day, 50 watts proves sufficient.

The obvious limitation is Apple’s ecosystem. Find My represents the product’s signature capability, but Android users receive none of its value. Without Apple’s location network, PlugBug becomes simply another premium GaN charger. Twelve South understandably optimized for Apple’s installed base, but that decision narrows the audience considerably.

The 50-watt model also has practical limits. It comfortably charges phones, tablets, handhelds, and lightweight laptops such as the MacBook Air, but larger mobile workstations or power-hungry creator laptops require substantially more power. Twelve South addresses that need with the 120-watt version, yet travelers carrying larger notebooks should consider whether the extra size and cost provide better long-term flexibility.

The Find My implementation relies on a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery (the same as Apple AirTags) rather than drawing power from the charger itself. Electrical isolation requirements explain the design, but replacing batteries every year feels slightly inelegant for a premium product. On the positive side, the battery is user-replaceable rather than permanently sealed, extending the charger’s useful life.

Finally, there is the question of value. At around $79.95, PlugBug is priced well above many dual-port GaN chargers offering similar charging performance. The difference pays for integrated tracking, industrial design, and travel accessories rather than additional charging speed. Buyers must decide whether recovering a misplaced charger once or twice justifies the premium. Frequent travelers will likely answer differently from those whose chargers rarely leave home.

Twelve South PlugBug Travel 50: The bottom line

The PlugBug Travel 50 succeeds because it addresses travel anxiety rather than charging technology alone. USB-C chargers have largely become interchangeable commodities. Twelve South found an opportunity to differentiate by making the charger itself part of the travel infrastructure instead of another anonymous accessory tossed into a bag.

For Apple users who travel regularly, the combination of Find My integration, thoughtful industrial design, international adapters, and dependable dual-port charging creates a product that earns a permanent place in a travel kit. Those seeking maximum wattage or the lowest possible cost will find stronger alternatives elsewhere, including among Twelve South’s product line. Those looking to eliminate one more source of travel friction will appreciate the PlugBug’s surprisingly practical innovation.
