ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED 15.6-inch Portable Monitor Review

The ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED 15.6-inch portable monitor delivers exceptional 4K OLED image quality in a lightweight, travel-friendly design. Its vibrant display, robust build, and versatile connectivity options make it a compelling choice for professionals seeking high-resolution visuals on the go.

I traveled with the ViewSonic VX1655 for over a week, in small confines and on conference room floors where it displayed my TheBrain models continuously during exhibitor sessions, often attracting more attention then my seven-foot tall retractable banner. I spent hours in my room finalizing presentations on my Lenovo X1 Nano, which also powered the monitor from a single USB-C cable. Not big a showy, but when I moved it to my small booth (tucking it under my arm or putting it in a canvas bag to take to the floor), it proved a great tool for engaging prospects―and it didn’t require crates or shipping to get it to the venue, just my carry-on.

What we like

Pros

  • Supports HDR content with VESA DisplayHDR 500 certification
  • Vibrant 4K OLED display with high color accuracy
  • Lightweight and slim design for portability
  • Integrated kickstand for adjustable viewing angles
  • Versatile connectivity with USB-C and mini-HDMI ports

The 15.6-inch 4K OLED display is the headline feature of the ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED, delivering a 3840 x 2160 resolution with extraordinary clarity and deep contrast. The OLED panel supports 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and boasts true blacks and vivid saturation, making it ideal for professionals in design, photography, or video editing. With HDR support via VESA DisplayHDR 500 certification, it handles high dynamic range content with depth and detail rarely seen in portable monitors.

Weighing in at just 1.5 pounds and measuring less than 0.6 inches thick, the VX1655-4K-OLED is one of the most portable premium monitors available. Its slim form factor makes it an easy companion for ultrabooks or tablets, while the included magnetic screen cover adds protection without bulk. The design doesn’t compromise build quality—the unit feels solid despite its minimal weight.

The integrated kickstand provides a stable and flexible viewing experience. With a wide tilt range and firm hinge, it allows for adjustments on a desk, a tray table, or even on uneven surfaces. This feature enhances usability in mobile work environments, where ergonomic consistency is hard to maintain. Unlike flip covers or folio-style cases that double as stands, ViewSonic’s implementation adds real stability.

Connectivity on this model is excellent. It includes two USB-C ports (both capable of DisplayPort input and 60W pass-through charging) and a mini-HDMI port. That means you can run power and video over a single cable with most modern laptops, and still have an additional port free. This makes it ideal for travel setups where simplicity and reduced cable clutter are priorities.

The support for HDR content is more than a marketing label—the monitor meets VESA DisplayHDR 500 specs, which require 500 nits of peak brightness and local contrast enhancement. HDR video and photos pop with dimensionality, particularly when viewed in controlled lighting. While this spec won’t replace a professional HDR reference display, it significantly outperforms most portable panels in color depth and tone mapping.

Solid, environmentally friendly packaging and a 3-year warranty back up the purchase.

What could be improved

Cons

  • Relatively high price point compared to competitors
  • Integrated speakers offer subpar audio quality
  • Glossy screen prone to reflections in bright environments
  • On-screen menu navigation can be unintuitive

Considering its 4K OLED panel, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, and integrated features like dual USB-C ports with 60W passthrough charging, the $519.99 price aligns with its advanced specifications. However, this cost may be a significant factor for budget-conscious consumers, especially when compared to other portable monitors offering 4K resolution at lower prices.

The integrated speakers on the VX1655-4K-OLED are serviceable at best. Positioned on the back and limited by the chassis size, they deliver flat audio with little presence or bass response. At around $519.99 retail, buyers might expect better onboard sound, but this remains a weak point—any serious media consumption will require headphones or external speakers.

The glossy OLED screen, while gorgeous in low-light conditions, is prone to reflections and glare in bright environments. Unlike some high-end displays with matte coatings or anti-reflective treatments, the ViewSonic does little to mitigate this issue. That can make outdoor use or bright office setups less comfortable without screen positioning adjustments.

Navigating the on-screen display (OSD) via the joystick-style control on the side is awkward. The menu structure feels dated, and the tactile feedback can be inconsistent. Adjusting brightness or switching sources becomes a minor chore compared to monitors with more intuitive touch or button-based controls.

Do keep in mind that these suggestions for improvement are for a 4K OLED display that tucks under an arm.

ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED 15.6-inch Portable Monitor: The bottom line

The ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED stands out in the portable monitor market with its exceptional 4K OLED display and thoughtful design features. While it commands a premium price, the monitor’s visual performance and portability make it a worthy investment for professionals seeking high-quality on-the-go displays. Potential buyers should weigh the trade-offs, such as audio quality and screen reflectivity, against their specific use cases.
