A great budget USB-C hub that includes three USB-A ports, a 4K HDMI adapter and Power Deliver 3.0 to pass up to 100W to a computer for charging and device power.

Monoprice 5-in-1 USB-C Hub Review

The attractive white case of Monoprice’s 5-in-1 USB-C to 4K HDMI Display Adapter and USB Hub looks great paired with any device.

Monoprice 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: ports

A clearly marked 1.5A port provides 7.5W of charge, complementing the other two standard USB 3.0 Type-A ports. The USB-C port pumps up to 100W through the unit, powering peripherals and charging most laptops and tablets while expanding port access. With USB 3.0 support, data transfers at up to 5gps. The USB-C port also supports that speed when not being used for power.

Logic built-into the hub quickly switches from external power via the USB-C port, to using the attached device to power other devices should power be lost via an outage or a disconnection.

The DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode capable HDMI port adds a single 4K 60Hz. monitor. For systems with only DP 1.2 Alt Mode, the port is limited to 4K at 30Hz.

I tend to use most mobile USB-C hubs with my iPad, as that is my travel device of choice (on my PC, the USB-C Hybrid hub because it also includes storage). While this hub would be adequate in most situations, I sometimes like to bring along a wired Ethernet connection. Monoprice is providing one of their new units soon, like the Monoprice 7-in-1 USB-C Multiport 4K HDMI Adapter that integrates Ethernet and SD card readers with the hub features found in this device (only 2 USB-A ports, however).

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the Monoprice 5-in-1 USB-C Hub comes from its $24.99 price tag, a price often discounted further on Amazon. Comparable hubs often cost an additional $10 or more than Monoprice’s hub.

The build quality is good, and the hub makes for an attractive complement to laptops or tablets with its neutral white exterior. The enclosure and strain reliefs on the cables all appear built to last.

The only thing I would like to see in this hub is a slightly longer cable. It works well with laptops, but the 12.9-inch iPad Pro sitting on a stand elevates the USB-C port. While the Monoprice 5-in-1 USB-C Hub doesn’t dangle too much, it also doesn’t sit flat on the desk. I did attach four little rubber feet to keep the hub from moving around too much.

The lightweight packaging is good, but Monoprice could do better by wrapping the USB-C hub in a blister pack designed for recycling.

Overall, Monoprice created a nice product for those who primarily need USB-A and HDMI support in a compact, travel-oriented hub.

Monoprice 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: The Bottom Line

A solid USB-C hub that includes three USB-A ports, a 4K HDMI adapter and Power Deliver 3.0 to pass up to 100W to a computer for charging and device power. Recommended for those on a budget, as a secondary hub for travel, or for those looking for good-looking white accessories to install a frosty vibe in their workspace.
