GE Cync Dynamic Effects Smart Hexagon Panels Review

So, not that they are up I enjoy my GE Cync Dynamic Effects Smart Hexagon Panels. That said, getting them up takes effort. It also took me some time to figure out where to put them. They need wall space. I ended up only mounting five of the seven provided panels, as mounting more in the limited space I have just would not have worked. I ended the installation process, which I detail in the following paragraph, with bruised fingers and frustration.
Luckily, the human mind heals with distance, and I can find pleasure in the soft glow of my hexagon lights without reexperiencing the near exasperation and minor pain induced by their installation. Had my daughter not visited and brought her installation experience, they might still be in their box.
Instasllation overview
Template masters, connectors and adhesive. For whatever reason, most likely that a credenza is not a fixed surface but rather a veneer board up its back, the included adhesive stripped could not find the wood―at all. they just refused to adhere. So I skipped the included adhesive strips and used my own Velcro to mount the GE Cync Hexagon Panels on the back of my credenza.
The installation still managed to be more frustrating than expected. The connectors are a nightmare. They do not seat properly, and the instructions on the sequence can be confusing. My first test run resulted in all dark lights. That’s where my daughter walked me back, making sure I connected the right corresponding hub locations.
Then there’s holding up the next connector with one already on the wall; luckily, the Velcro held during these transitional moments. Using Velcro also helped assuage any alignment issues, as it is much more forgiving than a strip of tape. I was able to reposition the panels without worrying about removing veneer (an issue I will deal with years from now). Still, the process of connecting each segment introduced its own set of headaches.
The connectors often didn’t seat properly, sometimes leaving a panel dark or out of sync with the rest. I rewired the arrangement, much to the dismay of my aching fingertips. Finally, I mounted them to their Velcro moorings, from which they have not moved. For all the promise of modular smart lighting, the actual setup was too dependent on patience, workarounds (Velcro, which I was lucky to already own) and expert guidance (at least more experienced), both for mounting and with the connector sequence.

What we like
Pros
- Bright and vibrant lighting
- Versatile design configurations
- Effective companion app
- No hub required for operation
- Music synchronization feature
The GE Cync Hexagon Panels deliver impressive brightness, reaching up to 1,800 lumens, and support over 16 million colors. Each panel features six controllable zones, allowing for intricate light shows and effects. This level of customization is ideal for creating immersive environments in gaming setups or modern living spaces.
Design flexibility is great if you have the patience and the room to work (both wall and a working area during installation). The modular nature of the panels enables owners to craft various configurations, from simple patterns to complex arrangements. Starter kits are available in 5-pack, 7-pack and 10-pack options, priced at approximately $70, $120 and $160, respectively (on Amazon), with extension packs for further customization.
The Cync app, powered by Savant, offers intuitive control over the panels. Users can easily adjust colors, brightness, and effects, as well as set schedules and group controls. The app’s user-friendly interface enhances the overall experience, making it accessible even for those new to smart lighting. I can easily turn them on via Alexa.

A notable advantage is the panels’ ability to operate without the need for an external hub. This simplifies the setup process and reduces additional costs, making it more convenient for users to integrate the panels into their spaces.
The music synchronization feature adds an interactive element to the lighting experience. By syncing with ambient sounds, the panels can create dynamic light shows that respond to music, enhancing entertainment settings.
GE/Savant needs to think through out to make a more sustainable offer, as there a lot of little plastic and adhesive bits and covers that could probably be done away with or implemented in a more environmentally friendly way.
What could be improved
Cons
- Challenging installation process
- Limited smart home ecosystem compatibility
- Adhesive reliability issues
- Higher price point compared to competitors

Installation is challenging. While the panels come with templates and adhesive strips, aligning and securing them can be time-consuming and may require additional tools or assistance. Some users have resorted to alternative mounting solutions to ensure stability. The kit also includes screws which appear nearly untenible to install and maintain alignment.
The GE Cync Dynamic Effects Smart Hexagon Panels currently support integration with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, but lack compatibility with other ecosystems like Apple HomeKit and Matter. This limitation may affect users seeking a more unified smart home experience across different platforms. My biggest issue is remember which device turns on what. If it doesn’t work, I just ask something else.
Adhesive reliability is another concern. I have read about instances where panels detached from walls, leading to potential damage or the need for reinstallation. Stronger adhesives or additional mounting hardware to mitigate this issue, or perhaps a Velcro partnership?.
Compared to competitors, the GE Cync Hexagon Panels are priced on the higher end. While they offer unique features, the cost may be a deterrent for budget-conscious consumers, especially when alternative products provide similar functionalities at a lower price point.
GE Cync Dynamic Effects Smart Hexagon Panels: The bottom line
The GE Cync Dynamic Effects Smart Hexagon Panels are a compelling choice for those seeking vibrant, customizable lighting solutions. Their brightness, design flexibility, and app control offer a premium experience. However, potential buyers should weigh the installation challenges, ecosystem limitations, and cost against their specific needs and preferences.
