STM ChargeTree Mag 3-in-1 MagSafe Wireless Charging Station Review

Pros

  • Compact, foldable design for easy travel with a modern look
  • Charges iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch simultaneously

Cons

  • 20W wall plug not included
  • Moderate charging speeds
  • Single position for iPhone
  • LEDs may be too bright for some at night
  • Packaging is not sustainable
  • The $99.95 list price is set at the high end of the charge tree market

What we like

The STM ChargeTree MAG folds down into a slim and flat form, making it a great option for frequent travelers or those with limited desk space. Its collapsed size of 1.2 x 2.9 x 5.1 inches fits easily into small bags, ensuring convenience without adding bulk. The ChargeTree MAG offers a modern, minimalist look in both black and white color options. Its slim profile makes it suitable for most desk setups.

As the name implies, the STM ChargeTree MAG simultaneously charges MagSafe-compatible iPhones, AirPods, and Apple Watches. It is designed with dedicated platforms for each device: a magnetic phone dock for iPhone 12 and later, a back platform for AirPods, and a fold-out arm for the Apple Watch.

What could be improved

Not including a 20W block in the box is a good sustainability choice, but leaves power up to the owner, who may not choose the best block for the charger. The STM ChargeTree Mag: 3-in-1 MagSafe Wireless Charging Station requires a minimum of a 20W power source. I used the 20W block that came with an iPad Pro and had no issue with the charger. Given the wide variety of charging block available, I can imagine that some may under perform, which is how I took some of the Amazon review comments about

Even with the optimal block, this is not a fast charging stand. It also does not support Qi2 which limits its speed and the number of compatible devices it can charge.

The case unfolds into a fixed position. I would like to see STM consider a ratchet mechanism for the main hinge so that it can be locked into more than one position. Further, the design favors the verticle position for the phone which results in it not switching to Standby Mode when charging. If the phone is mounted horizontally, it will connect to the MagSafe magnet for charging but will cover the watch face.

Some may find the lights on the stand’s LED too bright at night. STM should consider a switch to dim or dim and turn off the LEDs.

The packaging still uses a plastic window (glued to the cardboard box), plastic retail hanger and a non-recyclable blister pack (at least not labled with a recycling label). I would love to see STM adopt an all paper packaging strategy as many of its competitors are doing. Made from ABS plastic and silicone STM offers no eco-friendly certifications.

At $99.95 the STM ChargeTree Mag runs about the same as similar units from Zagg/Mophie but it is more expensive that off-brand units that can run as low as $30. Those units, however, don’t have the quality reputation of STMGoods or Zagg.

STM ChargeTree Mag: The botton line

The ChargeTree MAG is an elegant, travel-friendly 3-in-1 charging station tailored for Apple users with iPhone 12 and later. Its compact design and MagSafe compatibility shine, but limitations like the absence of a wall plug, modest charging speeds, bright LEDs and less than sustainabile packaging might make it less appealing for some. A great option if portability and convieience are top priorities.
